Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipCaregiving an elder is somewhat like a rite of passage.
You find yourself coming to terms with loss, and at the same time, I think we— one has to realize that change is inevitable.
You have to learn to enter the world of the person.
So in the beginning, I think I tried a lot to correct my mother and I had to learn to kind of accept where she was at and what she was saying.
Even if it didn't make sense, I would just follow her logic and let her lead.
I found that there were things that really started to make sense.
There were like symbols and metaphors that really opened up this pathway to kind of understanding her in a really deep way and gave me a lot of insight that I would not have had prior to her having dementia.
She told me a lot actually about World War II, which was something that I was always interested in, but I could never, you know, get her to share with me.
And some of those things are recorded in the film and some of those stories are really profound and really opened up a piece of history.
Elders are really an embodiment of history, and so it's really important to kind of stay with someone and really slow yourself down to be open to hearing these stories.
