Neon signs aren't as ubiquitous as they once were, but the artistry has been receiving renewed appreciation. Wil Kirkman was well-known for his ability to make and repair intricate and fragile glass lights. Kirkman died of cancer last year, but Marcia Franklin of Idaho Public Television got the chance to see him at work before his passing and reports for our arts and culture series, CANVAS.

One creator, will Kirkman of Boise, Idaho was well known for his ability to both make and repair the intricate and fragile last lights.
Amna: Kirkman died of cancer late last year but Marcia Franklin of Idaho public television got the chance to see him at work before his passing.
She brings us this story for our arts and culture series, canvas.
♪ >>I'm nearly the last neon glass vendor in the state.
I'm working on a butterfly that will be blue, purple, and gold and it will be about 18-20 inches and it is a funlittle project.
I love the moment when I think of something to make.
I love making that idea a reality.
I use mainly two kinds of gases, neon and argon.
Argon is below and the rare Earth coatings on the inside of the tube will determine the actual color.
It is sort of a dance.
If you would.
Between the fires and the table.
The world soda disappears and all I see are the glass and the fires.
You kind of go into this flow state I think is what they call it.
It is a great feeling.
Hen I first started, illuminated signs were only in and out his led pot and they don't have that warm glow that reaches out to you and sexy when.
I'm not dissing led's, they have their place.
But be honest.
We are going to be putting 22 thousand volts through this thing.
You have to keep the tube hot enough that any sort of impurity in the glass vaporizes.
You have to get it up to about 600 degrees fahrenheit, 300 degrees celsius.
And then the blue knob here is the argon which I will put into the tube.
