Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Say seven A girls flag football championships Land Roberts, once again joined by Susan Caruthers.
You'll meet the third member of our broadcast team, Christina Chambers in just a moment.
But we, we look at these two 17 and oh teams coming into play today.
A lot on the line, but a lot to talk about and really focus on when it comes to these two teams and this matchup.
- Let's look at the keys to the game.
First of all, for Central Phoenix City, they need to utilize their speed and make a strong defensive stand against the rebels.
And then for Vestavia Hills, if they can spread out the field and focus on their run game, focus on speed, they can find success today in this game, - Our keys to the game, brought to you by the Home Builders Association of Alabama for more, as I mentioned, the third member of our team working hard there down on the field.
Christina Chambers.
Christina, - That's right.
Landrum Central, Phoenix City head coach Mitchell Holt.
He's in his second year coaching and he calls this season the Redemption Tour.
The Red Devils got knocked out in the qualifying tournament last year.
So he says that it's been the Redemption tour.
They beat teams like Smith Station, Auburn and even Vestavia Hills.
This the teams that they lost to last year.
So he says they're super excited to have that rematch with the rebels this year for a state title.
Now on the other sideline you have a Stevie Hills head coach, Doug Rogers.
He's in his third year coaching the Rebels and he says he wasn't for sure what to expect for the team this year, but he's leaned on experience.
They have 14 seniors leading this team and he says it's paid off, they're undefeated.
Heading into this game, - Our Children's of Alabama coin to, as you see Vestavia, they're in the Black jerseys, the white numerals, central Phoenix City with the white jerseys, the red numerals, and - We are - Getting set to go faculty - Member Catherine Torino.
- Hello ladies.
Ladies - And gentlemen, please stand and give a round of applause for these honorary captains and for all the teachers and administrators who support our students each and every day across the state of Alabama.
- Hello ladies, congratulations on making the state final Vestavia.
Y'all are our home team today.
So Central Phoenix City, you'll get to call the toss tails.
Heads, heads tails.
I'll toss it and catch it.
If it hits the ground we'll do it again.
What is your call?
The call was tails.
The call was tails, it is Heads Vestavia has won the toss.
Do you know what your choices are?
Vestavia is chosen to defer to the second half.
Do you know what your choices are?
Central Phoenix CD has elected to receive.
Which side of the field would you like to defend?
- We'll defend this.
- Okay, go ahead and put your backs this way.
- Good luck at head coach Mitchell Holtz attended Central High two seasons Coach Odd, the Red Devils 29 and five.
He's calling this the Redemption tour and why not?
And it looks like they've gotten most of their redemption anyways, they'd like to complete that.
And then on the other side, the head coach of Este Hills, Doug Rogers 41 and eight in his third season.
And these two coaches, the matchups, the offense we're going to see, especially being at the passing game.
I can't wait for this Susan.
- Yeah, - Look at these teams undefeated so much riding on this game.
All the buildup all season.
I mean to go undefeated to land here in Bryant Denny Stadium.
I mean the, you know the sun will set during this game.
The lights will come on the jumbotron.
I mean it is quite a venue for these ladies to get to play in.
Very exciting, - As you saw, Vestavia winning the toss, deferring to the second half.
So central of Phoenix City wearing the white jerseys right there.
They are led by their quarterback and she's a good one.
Garrett Griggs the junior, she is athletic leads the Red Devils in rushing also in passing through the air only 1600 yards passing through the air and 17 or 718 yards rushing.
And on first down you see the speed on the outside as Griggs gets to the perimeter, able to pick up good yardage on first down as the pull by the Vestavia rebel defender there.
As you take a look at some of the names, a lot of the names that we're gonna be calling Tim Garrett Griggs, but also Summer Gilly who does a wonderful job.
Madeline Lumpkin, who is the leader in receiving yards number four, that is certainly a player to keep your eye on in central Phoenix on the offensive side of the ball as we go through and and look at some of those other talented players, we'll get a look at some of the rebels as well.
We got a stacked look there on the left side and falling down behind the line of scrimmage.
The ball carrier for central of Phoenix City as you look at the starting defense, Molly Mack, sharp Madison, Blackburn, Lindsey, green River, Riley, Holland, Warren, Emily Spooner and Emily Cooper and Holland Warren.
Very good leading the team in Tackles River Riley one of the rushers for the rebels who wears number 19 leads Vestavia in sacks with 31 this season.
That is Griggs rolling off to the left side, no flag pull.
And then finally the flag is pulled by Emily Cooper, the outside linebacker.
But Gary Griggs showing the wheels early.
Susan for others, that's - Right.
Griggs a dual threat quarterback.
She is the passing leader and the rushing leader for her team.
So a name we'll be calling a lot tonight.
- Third down, coming up one of the red doubles, you need 14 yards.
The line of game is the 50 there on your screen.
Technically the 40 yard line as we play 80 yard dimensions going left to right and then 40 yards across.
A little bit different than the boys game and what you get in traditional football.
Dropping back Briggs showing the arm intercepted coming up big stepping in front, diving down to go and make that play.
Molly Mack Sharp, the cornerback for the rebels.
- A long pass there from Greg's.
I mean she had the arm, she had the receiver there.
Here, we'll see it on the replay.
But intercepted by the Rebels defender - Molly Mack Sharp.
Somebody that's we're told as a sophomore would easily be a starter on the offensive side of the ball.
She didn't miss the majority of the season playing volleyball but stepping up in numerous situations.
That's what the sophomore's known for.
And how about stepping up in a third down situation early in this game and getting the football for this explosive rebel offense.
That's - Right.
And so many multi-sport athletes too on this field.
You mentioned the volleyball players, we've got, we've got track stars, we've got basketball players.
These girls do it all and and their athleticism is gonna show tonight for sure.
- Julia Rose, the quarterback for the rebels.
She wears number 66, high completion percentage and we'll tell you more about Julia Rose as the late afternoon and evening progresses across the middle on this near side darting across what's number 32, Callie Davis with Incomplete should take a look.
Lane Turner, Christiana Belcher is a senior impressive also Christiana not only having 75 catches, 25 touchdowns to go along with it.
So high school wrestler and already has been accepted to West Point in completion there.
So the Red Devil's of Central Phoenix City showing off the defense and and this is a rebel offense that hasn't struggled very many times this season.
- Yo Landrum, I like the enthusiasm I'm seeing from both teams.
They're communicating well with each other.
Both teams seem, seem you know, like they're focused, ready to play this game.
I think we're gonna have a good one on our hands here.
- The punt indicated by the rebels so central of Phoenix City.
We will get it some contact there at the top.
Pitching the ball off Mariah Harrison, she found her teammate Madeline Lumpkin.
You look at the bracket, how these two teams arrived here in Tuscaloosa of Vestavia coming off a nice win over Lee and blanking them 21 nothing.
And then central offending city, not only the 34 to six win that they had over Pratville but 33 to six over Daphne.
So link that side of the bracket, Prattville flexing a little bit and just showing not only how good they are at putting up points but also protecting against them.
Aaron Griggs off the left side a flag is pulled is Emily Spooner the rebel linebacker number 38 comes up to make the pool.
Yeah, - No question that both of these teams deserve to be here.
Just convincing wins throughout the season.
Like we've said, both ending up here undefeated, these are your two best teams.
- Mitchell Holt looking down at the play card, getting in the call is guy at Griggs, his junior quarterback.
Red Devils second possession clock continues to move the running clock, which you will see most of this game.
There are stoppages in play and we'll get to that.
A nice flag pool there in the back.
It was Garrett Griggs trying this side and trying to tightrope the sideline coming up to make a fantastic pull.
You see another one of those rebel defenders and great pursuit by number 19, river Riley.
- Great pursuit, great determination.
Not letting your foot off the gas.
That's what it's gonna take in a game like this.
- Third down lying to gain is the 50 right there inside the script today of the Alabama Crimson Tide logo throwing across the body the far side of the field.
Rigs pass incomplete.
Trying to find a receiver.
Mariah Harrison - Thought - I'd bring up fourth down.
Once again punt or central to Phoenix City.
So both of these coaches and both of these teams kind of testing, feeling their way out here in the early going.
And another punt, this one an end over in fielded just outside the 20 in a flag pool.
Getting down to coverage was Mariah Harrison.
And on the return for Vestavia, just out past the 30 and I'll mark the ball at the 32 - Looking a little bit of the rules at this game, obviously different than traditional football and if you're just joining us you, you might wanna catch up on some of these rules we've mentioned the field size, we've got this field taped off.
The end zone actually starts at the 10 yard line.
If you're used to, you know, looking for that painted end zone, it's a little bit different in girls Flag football, 48 minute games touchdowns at the same six points, but then points after try you have to declare for one, two or three we'll go over several more of those rules differences as the game goes on.
- Well what stays the same is Interceptions and Julia Rose was just intercepted by Garrett Griggs stepped right in front of that pass.
It's an interception in a big time for that to happen as the Red Devils get it back.
And this time in Rebel territories to take a look again in - Great interception there by the defense - Christiana Belcher.
He talked about her rebel's leading receiver, that ball thrown behind her and it was Griggs very good athlete there to receive it.
Direct snap and the run right up the middle and trying to way through the middle was Allie Soan.
- Quick flag pull there.
You know one thing I've noticed over today that the defenders that rush the quarterback and rush quickly, I mean that is a key, that's a key for every team - River Riley Sac leader 31 Sacs for Vestavia there with the pull one of those defenders that not only is a RU specialist and athlete just north of three and a half minutes left in this opening quarter, no score but central of Phoenix City following the Griggs interception of Julia Rose threatening.
Remember Riley gonna have something to say about it?
Miss Rebel fans hope so.
First down, after the run, play good for a first down 20 yards.
All that separates central Phoenix city from the goal line.
Goal line starts there at the 10.
Pitch back now Griggs once again Vestavia, not full.
Great pursuit.
And this time coming over to make the stop it was Holland Warren, team leader in tackles - Colin Warren on the stop - Board.
Third member of our broadcast to crew who you've already heard from and working diligently - Well Landrum, you talk about Central Phoenix city quarterback Garrett Griggs.
This is kind of a surreal moment for her.
She is committed to play softball at Alabama.
Coach says she is such a competitor, she hates losing, but it's been a really cool moment for her.
She's actually played in a softball tournament at Road Stadium and now she gets to play inside Bryant Denny Stadium.
So a surreal moment for her, an Alabama commit that she gets to play in these two stadiums for two different sports and she's enjoying every moment of it.
- Really cool, thank you Christina.
Welcome Gary Griggs with a completion there to Colby Cook.
- Probably not many softball players that can stay say they've played on the field in Brian Denny.
- Nine yards.
That's how much central Phoenix City needs here.
With under two minutes to go in this first quarter, red Devil's trying to score First Briggs.
Let's get the snap come this way.
What a pole once again and get to River Riley.
- River Riley is fast.
I mean her speed is getting her to that, to that ball, into those flag pools every time.
Just where she needs to be.
- Remember taking her eyes off of that flag and a toile saving pull.
Now it's fourth down.
Does that work From what would be the 10 yard line?
It's the 20 yard line there on your screen that you see in the top right hand corner of the pylon.
Garrett Griggs thinking about it.
River Riley, given Chase getting around, did she get the ball across the goal line?
They're gonna mark her out at the one.
So Garrett Griggs tight roping the sideline, extending the football to the official on the far side of the field and can't believe it says that she was out at the one Vestavia dodging a bullet here in the early going, yeah, - Let's watch it here and see where she ends up.
- Official right there in a good call.
Vestavia backed up their own one yard line.
Julia Rose heaves it up.
Intercepted Colby Cook.
That's her eighth on the season.
And just like that, Rebel's trying to strike with a big play.
And the second time that Julia Rose has been intercepted here in the first 12 minutes of action.
Yeah, - Dangerous floating pass out there.
And too many defenders in the area and one got it.
- That'll be the final play of this first quarter.
In the first quarter.
It has been no score but central of Phoenix.
Hit it.
Getting it doarly on the defensive side of the ball.
It's the girls six a seven, a state championship flag football game.
We're back to Bryant Denny after this.
- The obsession that burns within determination.
The burning desire to make it drive the motivation to be the absolute best skills.

No.

Yep.

- I don't - Point is no good.
- Hold down.
They're playing on a big stage here.
They can handle it if they can just, you know, keep their composure, play like they play any other game.
- We apologize for the audio technical difficulties, but glad that we are back now.
Appreciate, hold on.
Hard work of all the members as you saw Doug Rogers, head coach of Avian now the rebels, they gonna come up with some offensive of their own and they do.
There's an end angel red devil there on the field and obviously grimacing in a lot of pain.
That's Colby Cook and the staff coming out to check on her.
- You know, we talk about even though this is not a contact sport to contact still happens obviously.
And these girls are willing to sacrifice their bodies when it comes to going for a flagpole or go or going for a pass.
Sometimes injuries do still happen unfortunately - As we take a look at the touchdown and how we arrived at the six nothing score.
Garrett Griggs the RPO, if you will, and strolling out and on the run.
Impressive, not the easiest throw to make.
And then she finds her favorite target and Naline Lumpkin who made a fine catch in traffic as well.
- Looks like the injured player was able to walk off.
Happy to see that - We'll be cooked heading over the sideline and and no padding.
So whether you take a knee to the the thigh or another exposed part in the body, you would expect there's a lot of contusions that you're gonna see.
Sometimes severe contusions and hopefully she's able to return.
But vestavia with a fresh set of downs as they work just this side up the 50 in a pass over the middle, it's caught coming up with a catch.
Callie Davis, - You know Landrum, this might be a good time for me to tell you that I'm actually a Vestavia Hills High School alone.
So while I'll try to stay impartial, I can't deny that I'm a rebel at heart.
We - Would expect nothing less from you, Susan, as a professional that you are.
Callie Davis, a freshman, unbelievable first year player with their speed and playmaking ability.
Some of that on display there.
So they had flag football when you were there at Vestavia, - Right?
No, they did not.
But however, one of their coaches, Deborah Broom, member of their coaching staff was my elementary school PE teacher.
So - I want to hear some of those stories.
- I'm gonna stay out of her way.
Our - Viewers want to hear it as well.
No, look at the Vestavia sideline.
Try to find Coach Broom.
Maybe a little bit, maybe.
Maybe a presidential physical fitness test for you.
- Look at that.
Play - The rope climb later on.
- I'm gonna pass on the presidential physical fitness test at this point.
Chloe - Lahey.
- I'm sure I was excellent at it in the past.
- How about that?
Razzle dazzle, correct.
Snap River Riley going out an option type play.
Second down for Vestavia, they need the 30 yard line or a fresh set of downs.
a Rose throwing that ball intercepted.
They say it hit the ground or was it clean by Garrett Griggs officials.
I believe Julia Rose might be the injured Vestavia player.
The Rebels quarterback.
The, the indication was that it was an interception but roughing the quarterback.
There's really no doubt about it.
And unfortunately Julia Rose without the protective headgear or even wrap around the head, her head hitting hard off the turf here inside of Bryant Denny Stadium.
And - Yeah, that is a well called penalty.
You know, I have noticed the Red Devils do have on some head protection.
We didn't see that in the first game.
Obviously we don't see that here with the rebels.
- The big concern and everyone's focus right now is pointed here towards number 66, Julia Rose Esia quarterback.
They will step off penalty, but the bigger concern is first and foremost Rose and her health.
And then after that, who tries to come in and fill those big shoes and a nice hand from both the Vestavia Faithful and the central Phoenix city faithful who've made the trip here to Tuscaloosa.
And that is a good indicator, but not telling the whole story with a serious nature of any type of head injury.
And that one right there.
Just very unfortunate.
- Run the pass, sir.
Defense 10 yards from - Previous - Spot.
A hustle play first - Down - By the central Phoenix City defender.
But unfortunately the result was the collision and then Julia Rose in her head hitting the turf.
So as they tend to, her and Christina Chambers will keep us updated on her status.
We turn our attention back to the rebels on offense.
I go with a screen and eluding the flagpole, making the catch, and then sprinting ahead.
Chloe Leahy as Molly Mack sharp is filled in at quarterback.
Outstanding athlete as we heard.
And screen pass, no warmup needed and then it was Lahey doing the rest.
As you take a look at the central Phoenix City scoring drive presented by Al dot eight plays, heating up two minutes and 25 seconds.
Second down, sharp loads up fires.
That one could have easily been intercepted.
And then a flag as we had some extracurricular after the play.
Chloe Leahy, the intended receiver and one of the central of Phoenix City defenders taking exception to something that went on and the official stepping in, throwing the flag and we'll wait for the call.
- Also, we were very close to having a, a quarterback sack as well.
Lots going on in that play to let 'em sort it out - A lot here on the line.
And you've seen the competitive nature of both of these teams in the early going and the flagpole is what drew the response from Summer Gilley.
Chloe Lahey, if I'm reading body language saying I didn't know that she didn't have the football, but having your flag pulled, I, I can imagine that's - A lot of emotions.
- Defense 10 yard penalty from the previous spot.
- You take that personally.
So here we go.
- Third down, - They'll step it off and it'll remain third down.
So the rebels keep the football - And there she is.
Coach Debra Broom on the coaching staff for the Vestavia Rebels flag football team.
- See if Christina can get, get the mic in front of her and maybe she can remember a young Susan for others.
- Probably wasn't very memorable in PE in elementary school, but we can try - The outside might be.
The call here is on the central of Phoenix City Defenders looked like ment - Defense - Crossed the line.
Five yard penalty indeed was a five yard step off.
So this is a drive at Central Phoenix City we'd like to forget about.
You still have to keep the rebels out of the end zone.
But late hits, we've had an injury, we've had a personal foul and then an offside penalty.
The rebels benefiting from the miscues of the Red Devils on defense.
That's right.
- Some unforced errors here.
They need to settle down.
They don't need these penalties.
- Molly Mack sharp quarterback replacing Julia Rose.
It's off with the training staff on the sideline.
I don't know if we can expect her to return that interception.
And it is returned and then the flag is pulled.
We're near the sideline.
Molly M Sharp, not seating.
The central Phoenix City defender who stepped in side of that one.
And the third interception we have seen for the Red Devils.
- I like how the Red Devil's defense, I mean they're, they're putting the hard press on the quarterback.
They're rushing, they are getting there.
They're putting the pressure on, they're making the rebels quarterback make quick decisions, not always the best decisions.
That's good to defense.
- Colby Cook.
It's good to see her back out there after being injured and having to head off to the Red Devil training tent.
And you see why she's so valuable.
Not only the offensive side of the ball, interceptions with seven on this season.
Now a pitch back little - Fastest is complete to Harrison - Athleticism.
Just overall, the athleticism we're seeing on both sides of the ball for central of Phoenix City.
- Absolutely a lot of multi-sport athletes.
Keep talking about - Sliding through the middle.
That is officially the running back AlleyOOP fan.
- This is the two minute warning - That'd be good for another, for the Phoenix City first out.
- Another great run there.
Back Garrett Griggs a dual threat.
- Lindsey Green, the safety 17 right there in your picture, racing over to prevent even further damage.
But Garrett Griggs, she is a threat to do a lot, but anytshe has the ball in her hands, a good job at disguising whether she's gonna run or pass the football.
But what an athlete, you know why she's earned a scholarship.
Plays softball here at the University of Alabama.
Pitch back to Griggs.
Flag was pulled was it before the pitch?
I believe they're gonna rule that it was.
And it was behind the 35 at the 36.
So once again, rebels defensively prevent anything before it gets started.
As the flag was pulled as it was Ally Supan who eventually pitched it off to Griggs, but a nice play defensively by Vestavia Hills.
Yeah, - A great defense being shown by the rebels.
I do like the, the Red Devils, just the creative offensive plays that they're pulling out.
They're, you know, using a lot of players.
They're spreading the field out.
I think that creativity is gonna pay off for them.
- Greg's and a nice pull coming all the way across the other side of the field.
River Riley.
Saving what could have been a first down.
Instead they market - River island - Behind the 30 yard line.
Essentially the 20 yard line here on our field, central of Phoenix City.
Looking on and seeing if they can convert here on third and short pitch backed to Griggs Now she'll throw it ahead.
Pass complete.
Yes.
Who Naline Lumpkin already with a touchdown reception today and they're on a big third down conversion.
Keeping this drive alive.
- That was a huge play for the red doubles.
Let's look at it again here first down.
- So with 33 seconds left timeout on the field central of Phoenix City Mutual Holt talking things over our timeout presented by Alabama Natural Gas Association Group.
Appreciate them and all of our participating sponsors their support of high school athletics throughout the state of Alabama and especially these three outstanding days with this being the first here in Tuscaloosa.
- That's right.
A lot more to come and, and so much excitement here surrounding girls flag football and just the explosive growth that it has seen, not only in our state, but all across the country.
And it just continues to grow.
This is the third year the Alabama High School Athletics Association's been doing somewhat of a pilot program next year.
Girls flag football will become a fully sanctioned championship sport this year.
As you'll see at the end they will be awarded a trophy.
It's a little bit different than the traditional Blue Map championship trophies.
However, next year these girls will be getting a blue map, - A ribbon, a trophy, a pendant, a medal.
It doesn't matter.
It doesn't matter.
It's all the same.
You're competing at the highest level.
The best against the best.
central of Phoenix City.
A nice pull coming over to make the Stop River Riley.
24 seconds left and time out on the field is Riley.
Our replay provided by Alabama Rural Electric.
Look how, - Look how Fast River Riley is showing why she's been the MVP for the past two years.
- This is the re second charge.
Time - Out a half central of Phoenix City with a timeout.
They got plenty of time to operate with, not far to go, only needing eight yards for their second touchdown.
And in a game like this, when you think about these defenses coming in and what we've seen defensively so far with the three interceptions from central of Phoenix City, a touchdown.
And if you're unable to, to convert the point after, doesn't matter that that seems like a lot of points here in what we've seen here in just under 24 minutes of play.
In his first half, Julia Rose Vestavia quarterback who has been knocked out with the head injury, finding the going tough as central Phoenix City.
No matter where she looked, it was white jerseys in the same for Molly Mac Sharp came in to spell Julia Rose and it was Colby Cook stepped in front of that pass.
That's really been the story.
He's vestavia unable to really get operating on the offensive side of the ball, but give credit to the rebels and trying to defend Garrett Griggs, who you just saw there.
The central of Phoenix City quarterback in a very creative offensive attack, if you will.
- Very creative - Pitch out.
Griggs gotta throw.
How about it?
So hard to defend.
Are they gonna run?
Are they gonna throw that time they threw?
And on the receiving end for the second time this afternoon, Naline lumpkin - Lumpkin, getting herself in position exactly where she needs to be.
Both times coming up with big plays for touchdowns for her team - Central of Phoenix City.
Line it up from the three for a opportunity for the one point after touchdown Grid's going deep.
We're gonna snap it though directly now they'll pitch it back to Griggs.
We've seen that before.
Throwing in traffic.
Make it look easy.
- They sure do.
- Chloe Broadwater, freshman on the receiving end of that point after touchdown 13.
Nothing.
You should take a look.
Once again, the - Conversion is new at - The creativity of Mitchell Holt and what they run and why it's just so hard to defend and a great reason why there's 17 and oh entering play here today.
- Yeah, Andrew, I mean it's hard to defend an offense like this.
They're able to get it to so many different players on the field.
Even within one play - You have a direct snap, then an option to Garrett Griggs.
She's a threat to run or to throw.
And then it's a split second decision which anybody would have in trying to defend.
That can be the difference in a stop in a touchdown and so far it's working to the Red Devil's advantage.
13, nothing is our score.

Jessica, you're gorgeous.
I love this.

Just shake out that tension though a little bit.
Yeah, let's do something dangerous.

- Welcome back to Bryant Denny Stadium.
We are at halftime of the six a seven A girls flag football state championship game, central Phoenix City out to a 13 to nothing lead on Vestavia Hills, two second quarter touchdowns with a conversion after the second touchdown.
It looks like a two point conversion, t you only get one point flag.
So Central Phoenix City leads 13 to nothing and Coach Jack Crow as a former offensive coordinator, you have to be impressed with the attack, the plan by central Phoenix City.
- There's more coaching concepts in this when you, when you look sometimes you're just watching the game, but there's, there's coaching going on here.
I can see coaching clinics being heavily attended by people that want to advance the concepts.
A lot of 'em being used out here probably some of the first time for some of these concepts.
- The ball movement snapping to the up back.
Yeah, and then you've got motion either way.
Yeah.
Then they, they roll.
It's almost, it looks a little bit like the old wishbone that - Used to run.
Yeah, there's deception built into this because the game has gotten fast really quick at in this game and when you have things moving that fast, you better create some misdirection or deception because everything will get run out of bounds if you don't.
- What does that do to a defense when you have that kind of movement?
Well, - It free, you know, coach Saban, I mean it's eye discipline.
You lose your eye discipline.
Things happen to you.
People get behind you, they get around you and if you, you know, all of that stuff makes you really have to train on keys and follow your keys.
- We'll see if Vestavia makes adjustments defensively at halftime and if they can stage a comeback.
But right now, central Phoenix City looks pretty much in control of this game.
Yeah, it's all right.
So we are at halftime of the 6 8 7 A girls flag football championship game.
Central Phoenix City leading 13 to nothing.
Stay with us here for the second half on Alabama public tech.

- Welcome back inside O Bryant Denny Stadium, our halftime stat, central Phoenix City leading in the 6 8 7 A flag football championship.
13.
Nothing Susan, some of the things that jump out to you, wow.
Look at, as you look at our - Stats, yeah, look at the difference in those passing yards.
That's not gonna work if you're the rebels.
But same with rushing.
I mean, gosh, central Phoenix city, I meeally just dominating in every statistic there.
I mean time of possession.
Gosh, that's so important in a game like this.
- Yeah, Doug Rogers certainly didn't expect this.
Julia Rose of SABA quarterback, she was knocked outta the remainder of the first half.
The good news is Julia Rose is back out there to begin the second half as Christina Chambers got a chance to catch up with Central Phoenix City's head coach Mitchell Holt.
- Alright coach, walk me through, you guys lead this one 13 to nothing.
How have you been able to find success on offense - This day?
He is doing a good job taking some of the basic stuff away from us.
We've had to make adjustments.
We killed ourself with a rough and the passer on interception and we had a a boneheaded mistake over there just reacting when we don't need to react.
Two scores is a good lead, but not against this offense.
They got a really good offense.
They can move the ball really well.
We're just gonna still play fundamental in the second half to have a chance to come out on top.
I'm proud of my girls, but we're just halfway there.
We got another half to go.
Alright - Coach, thanks so much.
Thank you.
Thank - You.
- Thank you Christina.
So Holt 13, noth but knows lots of time.
Left is Julia Rose, her pass incomplete too high for Christiana Belcher who came in 75 catches on the season, the leading receiver for the rebels in 25 touchdowns, but not only Belcher, but there's really nothing consistent on that side of the ball for Vestavia here.
On third down, the flag was pulled and that was before the throw.
So Julia Rose is sacked.
- Let's look at a quarterback comparison here between Garrett Griggs and Julia Rose.
Gosh, that completion, that stat right there, that, that, that says it all gonna have to complete some more passes if, if Vestavia wants to get back in this game and goodness at the yards.
Really, when you see these comparisons, you know, whether it be the quarterbacks or just the team stats, it tells the story of the game.
- Yeah, it does.
And the two interceptions for Julia Rose, Molly Mack Sharp, she had to come in, she was intercepted as well in a time of possession.
Doubled up for central of Phoenix City.
They're in that first half.
There's Garrett Griggs on the return of the punt and a nice flagpole.
My a rebel defender.
- You know, Landrum, I have loved watching these girls punt today.
I mean some of these punters could, could easily be on a a boys' football team and be punters.
I mean they're, they're great.
- It makes some of the boys look bad.
If you watch some of the punting, of course all great punting on display here on this championship stage all week.
Pitch out to Greg's.
Greg got the sideline inside of the line and then forced outta bounds right at the 37.
So once again, like clockwork red devil's on offense, making it look so easy - And so entertaining with these pitches every, every play they're fun to watch.
- Great.
It's rolling out - Wow.
- Able to find Naline Lumpkin who was the safety valve and came across fingertips, able to control that football and eventually keeping possession.
That is huge is they will move the sticks.
It'll be a fresh set of down.
- Gotta love that.
Give and go play.
I mean the, the play designs here are, are some of the most entertaining I've ever seen.
- Going back the other way across the field.
Mariah Harrison stepping out of bounds inside of what we will call the 10 yard line on the field.
It's marked as the 20 as Mitchell Holt sitting on the play to his offense.
Second down central of Phoenix City.
Eats eight yards to add to already a 13.
Nothing lead - So far.
At least it does not appear that Vestavia has come out of halftime.
Better able to defend the defend against this offense.
- It's hard to defend that Garrett Griggs a touchdown off the left side.
othing central to Phoenix City.
Adding to their halftime lead.
Unfortunately for coach Doug Rogers and his group of rebels, it has been too much Red Devils and too much number two wearing white.
- You know it's been mentioned but the central Phoenix city boys play right after this and love to see the crowd that they brought here.
The excitement in the stands.
- Garrett Griggs and Complete.
She was trying to find Naline lumpkin once again.
It was well defended, able to avoid her flag being pulled, was able to get the pass away.
19 nothing and not a whole lot to smile about.
The rebels.
- A diversion - Of Tim Whale.
Take a look there.
River Riley called her name a lot and she has been all over the field, but unfortunately it was central of Phoenix City.
- Let's take a look at this Aldot scoring Drive four plays, 33 yards, only two minutes and 30 seconds to get it done.
- Esia needs to get something done here in this possession.
Julia Rose far side of the field.
Good throw.
How about the pitch after the catch ruler down at the 35, 1 of the better.
Maybe the best offensive play we've seen from the rebels.
I think so, so far here this afternoon.
So maybe that gets the confidence, sparked this Revel offense.
That's - What they need.
A momentum shift and some confidence.
I'm waiting to see what this flag is for - Roughing the passer defense.
- Ruffing the passer 10 yards, the second one seen automatic - First down - Central of Phoenix City.
Aggressive the defense and mental hole and you could be aggressive but don't get 15 yard penalties.
That's right.
- You gotta be able to pull up and that's so hard when these girls are emotional, they're in the moment, they're running full speed.
You see how it can happen.
- Julia Rose lost it up.
That one dangerously close to being intercepted as well as Christiana Belcher, the intended receiver.
Take a look at the roughing, the passer call coming in on the left side side.
Yep.
And protecting the quarterback.
Julia Rose was lucky that she was able to return to action and she went through the pro protocol and Vestavia training staff, making sure that she was okay and that ball thrown behind the intended wide receiver.
Emily Spooner.
- Yeah, Stevia came up with that one big offensive play they've continued to to look for for more after that.
So far nothing.
- Julia Rose talking to the coaching staff about what she means.
Strong arm, huge football iq, bets IQ on the team and sometimes we'll call our own plays when necessary.
So draws up plays in practice as you see the arm there on the far side of the field, it is caught in a nice catch and then running after the catch and eventually flag being pulled.
But Savannah Grayson rebel wide receiver, - Exactly what avian needed there.
A big conversion, a big moment in the game, - Gracious set her downs, could - Build some confidence, could shift some momentum.
- Avian enjoying success on the Red Devil side of the 50.
Seeing that tonight, that pass incomplete.
Falling to the turf.
- Heavy pressure there.
Coming from the Red Devil's defense, - Julia Rose looking towards the sideline, get the play call Doug Rogers crossing.
Just too hot to handle.
Callie Davis was s streaking across the middle and Callie Davis a freshman but unbelievable first year player.
According to Coach Rogers speed catching ability makes other players Miss can be a huge asset, but Julia Rose maybe a little too much on that pass.
Oh this way.
Pass complete near a first down and is hauling it in was Chloe Leahy the stack.
- Chloe Lahey was able to get completely wide open there for that reception.
- Slight smile after the catch, getting some encouragement from her teammates on this side of the field.
- Gotta love to - See that.
There's a bigger smile.
Fourth down Bels just need a couple of yards to extend this drive.
Try to get some points on the board before the conclusion.
After third quarter pass complete flag is pulled but Callie Davis coming across the middle with a huge play.
We talk about that freshman with the catching ability and the playmaking ability and she does a lot after the catching.
Good job of getting her body turned north, if you will, and getting Upfield and getting some of that extra yard of Susan.
- Big play for Vestavia and like you said, I mean if you've got a freshman that's playing at this level, I mean it's gonna be fun to watch her over the next several years.
- Lay he coming in motion.
They're gonna put down underneath, see the quick Playmaking ability and now Rebels getting in a rhythm and Savannah Grayson comes up with that catch flag pool just inside of the 20 yard line and second down, rebels need nine yards to get their first points on the board here inside of the Children's of Alabama.
Red Zone Rose had to avoid the pressure, was able to do so, but had to side arm that ball as she was looking once again for Cali Davis too low and Davis couldn't go down and get it.
- Yeah, Vestavia isn't a pretty big deficit here points wise that they're gonna have to score here if they wanna turn this around.
- Closing seconds of this third quarter and with a running clock and what we've seen from central of Phoenix City can squander a possession.
And third down, Julia Rose comes this way.
Well covered and she was trying to find Chloe Leahy once again, but once again the Red Devils very good coverage.
The pressure and over they're in the coverage, the - Pressure, the speed.
Yeah that defense, I mean it's hard to beat speed.
The Red Devils have it.
- Junior cornerback Summer Gilly - Called - Time Out.
I have an Alabama Natural Gas Association time out on the field, but that gives us time to look at this pass.
Rush and times have been guilty of rough roughing the passer, but if you're Julia Rose, you've gotta have eyes everywhere as you see the pursuit of Ashlyn Nixon coming in to try to pull that flag before anything got going.
- Landrum, have you played any flag football in your day?
- Played a little bit.
It's been since college.
- It's not an easy sport to play very physical even though it's non-contact.
Fast moving.
The cuts that have to be made, I mean these girls are true athletes.
I love to see the central of Phoenix City girls getting their crowd fired up.
- The third member of our team and hopefully staying warm.
Christina Chambers, she's there on the sideline.
Christina, - Yeah, one thing that Doug Rogers Vestavia Hills head coach said at the halftime to his team is, hey, they're fast, but we just need to match their speed.
If we can do that and come down here and score.
We've been down before.
Look at the Spain Park game.
They know how to fight and come back from behind.
So we'll see if they can do that here - In complete.
Pass the ball dead.
And not sure what Doug Rogers had designed there, but that certainly wasn't it.
Well - If you're down by 19, you've you've gotta make a catch like that.
- Only back sharp took her eyes off of it.
Julia Rose, you see fierce competitor but the expression tells it all with her team trailing 19, nothing with one quarter left, 12 minutes left to go in central Phoenix City trying to claim a state championship in the six a seven A girls flag football championship here in Tuscaloosa.

- Welcome back, start of the fourth quarter there on your left central, the Phoenix City head football coach Mitchell Holt on the right, Vestavia Hills head coach Doug Rogers.
Both of these gentlemen.
Five years combined in really the inception, early stages of this sport, but right now central of Phoenix City 19, nothing in a razzle dazzle once more and it's gonna result in another touchdown.
Another touchdown for naline lumpkin.
- What an incredible play.
Put that one on the highlight reel.
- There is a flag and we will have to check the flag.
So hold everything.
- We're way back on the other side of the field.
- Head official not moving anywhere.
And typically that would indicate I would think the call going against central of Phoenix City, but the chain crew is moving now we get the call.
- Result of the play is a touchdown roughing.
The passer defense.
Central Phoenix City has elected to take this on the next possession.
We're going from one point.
- So roughing the passer called this time against Coach Rogers in Vestavia.
So the result of the play is a touchdown and what a touchdown it was.
How about the throw?
- Absolutely.
I mean how how long was that throw?
Do we have a stat on that?
I mean just, you know, they, they toss it in the backfield.
They make long throws.
I mean, central Phoenix city cannot be stopped in this game.
Nothing really going right for the rebels.
You know, even when we sink, think we see a little crack in the door, maybe they get some momentum.
Red devils seem to just shut it down every time.
- A tight spiral, a throw that might even make Jalen Monroe or be Bryce Young blush central of Phoenix City went after touchdown.
Interesting play call there and a nice breakup in the middle of Lindsey Green who casually just deflects the ball away.
But it all got started with a lot of moving parts and the throw from Mariah Harrison to Naline Lumpkin - Beautiful throw and catch the defender misses the flag pull there, it results in a touchdown.
That's the type of play these coaches dream about.
- Madeline Lumpkin smiling for the last 20 yards of that jaunt to the end zone.
- We have seen her smile a lot this afternoon and she deserves it.
- Why not?
Her team's leading 25 nothing and she's had an outstanding game right now.
I would guess maybe MVP Honors come across the middle to make the catch the rebels.
That's Lane turner.
- Yeah and you saw how lane holds the ball out.
Not only you know to increase, you know, maximum amount of yardage, but also trying not to flag guard.
That's something we haven't talked about in this game, but you have to give your those defenders ample opportunity to be able to grab that flag.
Can't hold your arms down and protect your - Flags.
Julia Rose gonna throw to her center making the catch.
Once again, it's Elaine Turner.
So maybe finding a little something and some success for Doug Rogers hasn't seen much of it today, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
- Maybe they are getting into a rhythm here.
- Central of Phoenix City Band is here.
It also is worth noting that Winona and the Dragon marching band has stuck around and still entertaining the crowd after the dragons.
- Absolutely love that - Claim.
The 1 8 5 A flag championship.
Well, - And that's what's neat about all these games.
I mean this is really an opportunity that our state comes together, all these different communities from all around the state.
People come, they support each other, they stay after their game, they watch other games.
It's, it is really, really a special time here in Brent Denny Stadium.
- Hey, you make the trip, why limit it to just one game?
That's right, you got another one coming up.
Seven o'clock in the seven, A state championship between Thompson and Central of Phoenix City.
That ball interception intercepted by Naline dump lumpkin playing defensive back there, but the sure hands of lumpkin.
Number four, the fourth interception thrown today by the rebel offense.
The third by Julia Rose and - The Rebels looking a little dejected even when we thought maybe they were getting into a rhythm.
Another interception by the Red Devils - Trying to find Christiana Belcher leading receiver.
And this is something that Stevia has just not been faced with and something they have been faced with today.
The pressure of the Red Devils defensively, Ashlyn Nixon being a big reason why - You cannot underestimate the impact that that's had and that she's had on this game.
- Rose has never been comfortable feeling the pressure disrupting the timing of this offense that has been virtually flawless all seasons.
The flag pulled right in front of the rebel sideline, bring up second down for central of Phoenix City.
Just over six and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter of this one and quarterback in the game with the Red Devils.
- And you know, one of the few plays they've missed on - Dane Ferguson.
Your quarterback wearing number 31.
Now Ferguson out there as well as several other substitutions.
Lily Bell throwing that pass is caught by Summer.
Gilly Christina Chambers standing by on the sideline.
Christina.
- Yeah, you'll notice a lot of central fans starting to pack into Bryant Denny Stadium and obviously they're cheering on the girls flag football team, but the boys will play Thompson in the seven A game right after this.
I asked Coach Holt how it's been the atmosphere around campus and he said it's been amazing.
Both the girls and boys had a sendoff on Tuesday.
They both had walkthroughs here at Bright and Denny Stadium and he said to be able to share this stage with the boys team has been exciting time for the the girls, the boys, just the community in general.
And he said it's been awesome to see everyone come together and support a newer sport on campus and them having some success.
- Well said Christina, Lily Bell.
- You know, something you don't expect to see and don't often see in a championship game.
But you know, assuming Central Phoenix City so far ahead of Usav at this point looks like they're, they're putting in some of their second string.
Maybe get them a little practice for next year.
- Saw a shot of Lily Bell who came in and quarterback spell here at Griggs that pass incomplete.
That pretty much sums it up, that look of frustration in the hand across the forehead.
Chloe Leahy Rebels certainly seen better days, but what an outstanding season here late.
It is all central to Phoenix City and after receiving the pass, Leahy loads up in fires but can't find one of her rebel teammates.
The closest to it was Lane Turner.
- The Rebels try their own brand of trickery but to no avail.
- We're getting on the - After.
- Seen some frustration from the Rebels players.
- Lahey once again, stays behind the line, throws across the middle and can't find Turner.
She found her just to pass too low, - Just nothing working for the rebels.
- Fuck winding down.
Three and a half minutes left this six a seven A flag football state championship central of Phoenix City.
I don't think it would be premature, say Red Devil's.
I'm gonna take this one back, but I'm sure they'll stick around to watch their classmates and the boys take on Thompson in our seven A game as we wrap up day one here in Tuscaloosa, that ball knocked away.
Good coverage.
You had two rebels in the area, but you also had that young lady Sharia.
Brandon the cornerback for the Red Devils knocking it away now.
Central Phoenix City back on offense.
- You know, you can't say enough in this game about the central Phoenix City's defense.
I mean just continuing to bring the pressure, continuing to use that speed they have not let up on Vestavia yet and it shows, you know, land.
We've talked about the growth of flag football.
I'm not sure if you've heard that.
It will be added to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
- Excited about it and Annee is taken, so Central Phoenix City just gonna burn some clock and it's now time for our A b, C play of the game and a lot to choose from.
But this one really stands out.
Mariah Harrison doing her best Jaylen Mill impersonation here inside of Bryant Denny as she finds a leading target and who's had a big day Naline lumpkin for the long pitch and catch - Due to the store - Differential Phoenix City already celebrating down there on the turf.
As that will do it teams walking out to the center of the field to shake hands and for coach Mitchell Holt and the Red Devil's already a good start.
Maybe it's a good omen for central of Phoenix City.
Capturing the second game of our triple header here today in joining the Winona Dragons as state champions for the 2023 flag football season h in the Alabama high school athletic association, Christina Chambers is standing by with the state championship winning coach, Mitchell Holt.
Christina, - Coach, what can you say about this win your team getting it done on both sides of the ball here tonight.
- First team in school history to play for a state champion female team in school history playing a championship game and they come up here and do what they've done all year.
Excellent defense.
Worked their issues.
A lot of credit to Vestavia.
They had a really good game plan.
We've played great defense all all year, really all year.
Our defense has been there and our offense's hard to defend at once they get going, they did great job.
I'm just, I'm just proud of this whole group of girls I'm proud for, for Phoenix City.
I'm proud for flag football.
What an environment where, where we're at three years later and I can't wait to see where the sport goes in five years, but that group of girls right there is special.
That's special.
And today I play like a champion.
When we walked out, I told 'em before we left to exclusive where legends are made and today they'll be legends the rest of their life.
They'll be state champs the rest of their life.
- Thanks so much coach.
Congratulations.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
- Recipe for success.
When your defense average is giving up just over four points per game and another shutout for central of Phoenix City is now both teams and their coaching staff, support staff administration there on the field as they await the trophy presentation.
And nobody would be any more shocked than than I was after witnessing that 48 minutes of football.
And quite frankly it was just domination by central of Phoenix City.
It sure - Was.
You know, and, and it, it's sometimes hard to see tears on both sides.
You know, you have the tears of joy for the winner and then the, the tears of sadness and defeat for, for the runner up.
But ladies go to the trophy presentation ladies, - Now it's time for our awards presentation and we turn it over to our public address.
Announcer - Would like to congratulate both head coaches, their teams and staff on an amazing 2023 season and for making it to this year's Super seven championship game.
To commemorate this incredible accomplishment, each head coach will receive an official Wilson Championship football presenting this year's championship.
Footballs is Brandon Dean, director of the Alabama High School athletic directors and coaches Associations.
First from Vestavia Hills High School head coach Doug Rogers, and now from Central Phoenix City High School head coach Mitchell Holt.
At this time we ask you please welcome Kim Vickers, associate executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association for the presentation of the 2023 Class seven A six A girls flag football state championship runner up trophy your 20 23 6 A seven A girls flag football state championship runner up the rebels of Vestavia Hills High School, led by head coach Doug Rogers.
And now for the moment you've all been waiting for, please give a warm welcome to executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, Alvin Briggs for the presentation of the 20 23 6 A seven A girls flag football state championship trophy.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 20 23 6 A seven A girls flag football state champions are the Red Devils of Central Phoenix City, led by head coach Mitchell.
Hope, Congratulations.
- Well, that celebration at midfield says it all.
Susan Caruthers, we were treated to two really talented competitive games for the most part, especially in the first half of our double header with Winona Outlasting, a Montgomery Catholic team in the one A through five A here.
It was a different story, but you can't take anything away from Doug Rogers and what Vestavia Hills the Rebels did this season.
Unfortunately to date didn't go well.
But you gotta tip your cap to Central Phoenix City.
- That's right.
This afternoon's really been the tale of two games when we had one that was tied.
Most of the game went into overtime and then this one, you know, not so, not so competitive I guess, but gosh, to hats off to all four of these teams.
I mean, what it has taken for these girls over this season to practice, to compete, to win, and to get to play at this high level.
