And we're here at Canterbury United Methodist Church on December the 6th of 2024, and we're here to celebrate the first week of Advent with a carol service presented by the BSC Alumni Choir.
The college closed in the spring, but we wanted to make sure that we continued this tradition, because it is so meaningful.
It's a soulful musical experience, and it brings us joy to share this music with people all over Alabama.
People have traveled from up to 4,000 miles of rehearsal travel just to get here and enjoy this opportunity to sing for you.
"Hold fast to what is good."
Mary Lib Lowery, a minister at First Methodist Church, downtown Birmingham, always included these words in her benedictions.
"We are all holding fast to what is good."
My friends, when the college closed in May, I felt the need to make sure this Carol Service would continue.
I wasn't willing to give up this Christmastime experience, and I am so glad that each of you weren't willing to give it up either.
We do this to bring you Christmas music that we love to share from our heart and soul.
Hopefully you have received a blessing of joy and love with this evening's performance.
The original director of the choir, Dr. Hugh Thomas, shared his experience after a particularly moving rehearsal, and said, "Nobody has Christmas like we do."
We hope this expression of joy from our souls resonates with you for a merry Christmas.
Forward ever, always.
Please be seated.
My name is Keith Thompson, and I have the honor of serving as the senior minister here at Canterbury United Methodist Church, and it is my great delight to welcome each of you to the 88th annual BSC Lessons and Carols Service.
And I am so delighted that we get to be here tonight.
For many of us, the Lessons and Carols Service marks the beginning of Christmas season, and a time of reflection and a time of perspective and anticipation for all of us.
As we step into this season, we are reminded that seasons always bring change.
This year, we gather without familiar faces up front that we've grown accustomed to, people in the images, reflections of people like Hugh Thomas and Lester Seigel and Jim Cook, who have guided us through so much for so long.
But we are blessed this evening to be led by the passionate and gifted alumni of our beloved alma mater.
Like so many of you, tonight I find this service to be a balm for my soul, a cherished moment of peace, renewal, and reconnecting.
I offer my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of reviving and continuing this great tradition.
You have truly embodied the spirit of our watchword together, forward ever, and you have done so with grace and dedication.
Thank you for being here tonight to share in this sacred tradition.
May this service bring you joy and light to your hearts as we celebrate together.

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.

"In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
And the Virgin's name was Mary.
And he came to her and said, 'Hail, oh favored one, the Lord is with you.'
But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.
And the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.
And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.'
And Mary said to the angel, 'How shall this be, since I have no husband?'
And the angel said to her, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.'
And Mary said, 'Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.'
And the angel departed from her."

"In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.
And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage with David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered.
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swallowing cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn."

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shown around them, and they were filled with fear.
And the angel said to them, 'Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find the babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.'

He was in the beginning.
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him.
He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.
The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not.
He came to his own home, and his own people received him not.
But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as as of the only Son from the Father."
