(lively music) (lively music) (lively music continues) (lively music continues) (audience applauding) (lively music) - Greetings, I am your host, and, yes, the Priestess of the Party Qi Dada.
- [Audience Member] Qi Dada!
- Welcoming you to "Black Divas: Honoring Motherhood and Maternal Health."
On a concert full of laughter and art and song and this incredible jacket.
- [Audience Member] Yes.
(audience applauding) (lively music) - I got jackets for days.
I got lots of jackets, honey.
Seriously, her voice is a gift, a gift of life.
She finds joy in the midst of it all.
She sings because she is sound.
Enjoy the profound talents of Black Divas as they give voice for those who have been silenced, those who lost their lives during birth because they were not listened to.
This is a program for all to share and enjoy.
So please put your hands together for Black Divas!
(audience cheering) (audience applauding) (audience applauding) (lively music) - We're so sorry.
- We're so sorry.
- Sorry.
My bad.
- What was the holdup?
- Listen, we had to get the tea.
Listen, Craven's cousin went and bought a wig off the internet.
- Oh stop it.
- And parts of it were flying off during lunch.
So by the time the lunch ended, she looked like a balled gym teacher.
- Oh no.
- Honey, I hear you, but don't tell me the tea.
Tell them the tea.
Y'all wanna hear the tea?
- Yes.
- Yeah.

(audience chattering) (lively music) - See, don't turn away 'cause I caught you staring.
You seem to have a problem with it, so I'm gonna let you know all about my hair.
You see in each strand lies story from mother to daughter to grandma to auntie.
To know about it is to have an insight about me.
You see, my hair can stand up straight like a soldier in a cavalry, and for lack of a better word, my hair was just plain old nappy.
My hair has been fried, dyed and slicked to the side.
Twisted, burned, turned, clipped, whipped, crimped, blown out, grown out, and then just torn out.
Like the many sides of my being, my hair has taken on many formations.
Some were absolutely beautiful and others caused great humiliation.
But I'm stuck on the Black woman's fixation to have used her hair to aid her in assimilation.
You see, you assimilate it 'cause you believe that when they told you and your hair were ugly.
Black girl, cover up your hair so I don't have to see the one thing that makes me realize how unique you are to me.
They told you and they told you, and so it finally sunk in.
And then the hair processes did begin.
It started off kinda slow, but ended up like a drug with every fluff of the ends and every painful tug, what's this?
A comb, a fire?
Something new has just transpired.
Sitting in the kitchen, grease all up on your neck, clenching your teeth as you start to sweat, praying that your mother will make a move that you would soon regret, ow, Mama!
Then after that, you didn't play when she told you to hold your ear back.
(audience laughing) (lively music) Girl, you wouldn't get burned if you would just relax.
Relax, relax, you're telling me to relax?
I wish my hair would just relax.
I wish my hair would be so free.
I just wish my hair wasn't so ugly.
See, instead of connecting with your spiritual, you commenced the six week to three-month ritual.
An inferno upon your head for beauty sake.
A fire that commence your whole body the you can't move 'cause you waiting for that perm to take.
Take it out.
Take it out.
I can't take it no more.
Take it out.
(lively music) So we finally did.
We no longer saw what you was seeing.
We found out we were Nubian queens.
It was on the page of every Ebony and Essence Magazine.
We didn't come second on nobody's list, fall for any more of your tricks.
Black beauty was something we could no longer resist.
Afro chicks with their Afro picks rolled with their Afros and they rolled thick because they were beautiful.
Beauty came naturally.
They were naturally beautiful.
But wait a minute.
Something evil is about to happen.
Something wicked is about to unfurl.
A fool is born and he invents the Jheri curl.
(audience laughing) (lively music) You wouldn't dare steal anything 'cause you know they catch you quick.
All they gotta do is follow the drips, follow the drips, follow the drip.
Shower cap on your head when you wanted to go to bed.
Black people's couches were in mass hysteria, afraid to let people in like that family from "Coming to America."
(audience laughing) (lively music) But for what?
'Cause you believe them when they told you that you and your hair were ugly.
But that's all right.
That's okay.
'Cause what they did backfired in a way, 'cause now they're the ones that can't relate when I talk about jam bergamot or Sulfur8.
Now they're the ones that can't get down with me when I talk about TCB.
Now they're the ones that have no notion when I talk about cramps in your neck from that jerky motion of regaining yours sanity with every drop of pink lotion.
