- We are at the MSU Broad Art Museum in East Lansing, Michigan where we help artists share important stories about their world.
And I'm gonna share one of those stories with you now.
Here in this exhibition by Caroline Monnet, we're in front of a video called Transatlantic, which was filmed by the artist during her 22-day voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on a cargo ship.
Imagine that you are traveling with the artist.
Look closely, what are four things you see?
What are three things that you could touch or feel?
Now, what might you hear?
You may have already noticed that this image is mirrored.
The artist tells us that she grew up in two different cultures: French and Algonquin, who are indigenous peoples of Canada.
She says that she's really interested in the tensions between two opposite things and the mirroring reminds us that nothing is just one thing.
We can have two different feelings at once, we can be from two different cultures, we can even travel towards something while moving away from something else.
What could you create to show a journey that you've taken?
Thanks for joining me on this art story.
Your family can discover more art stories at the MSU Broad or at a museum near you.
