Do you wanna gimme a hand?
Well, I only have one to spare.
(puppet laughs) Hey, we're making puppets today, so let's get going.
(upbeat music) Hi, I'm Mrs. Fred, and I have a super fun lesson for you today.
We are going to be taking the concept of origami, which is the ancient Japanese art of folding paper into shapes and figures, and we're gonna take that and build it into a puppet.
So puppets are actually really, really cool.
They've been around since ancient Greece.
Isn't that right, Davey?
(crickets chirping) Well, that's a little before his time, but we are gonna take that concept and build some super fun puppets!
What?
Oh, yeah.
We can't do anything without starting with our art motto, and it goes a little something like this.
In every art lesson, I'm gonna ask you to try your best, be creative, and problem-solve.
That's pretty important, so let's hang it up here.
Now, let's find out what our art goals are for today.
Today's art goals are to turn a flat piece of paper into a 3D puppet, just like this one my daughter made.
We're gonna use scrap paper, glue, and scissors to embellish our creation.
That means we are gonna make them super fancy.
The art materials we'll need today are glue and scissors, paper, coloring tools, tape, and always your imagination.
(upbeat music) I'm gonna first start by folding my paper into thirds.
Make sure it's pretty even into thirds, but if you don't get it there, that's okay.
Then we're gonna glue it down so our paper stays together really well.
Next thing, we fold it in half, match up your ends, and crease the paper.
Then we're gonna fold that open part to the middle.
Now we have a lightning bolt.
If we fold it again, we have a W or an M. We also have a puppet.
Next up, I'm just gonna start embellishing and making eyes for my frog, and if I fold it in half, I can get 2 pieces out of one piece of paper.
But I need to make a spot for the glue to go, so I'm gonna fold a little foot, and that's how I'll glue it.
Before I glue it to the puppet, I am going to cut out some eyes and just glue them down.
And now on that little foot I made, that's where I put my glue.
Press that down and hold it, and now we have some eyes.
Once I glue my eyes down, then I'm gonna have some fun embellishing.
I'm gonna add freckles, a mouth, and a tongue.
Here, I'm just using a paper puncher and I'm gonna glue those down.
If I trace my puppet onto this pink paper, then I can create an organic shape to cut out and glue inside of his mouth.
Ta-da!
To make a tongue, I'm just cutting a long rectangle, gluing it down, and then I'm gonna curl it with a pen.
There we have our frog.
You can see I glued on a little fly.
Waha!
So did we do our job today?
Did we turn a flat piece of paper like this into a 3D puppet?
Oh yeah, we totally did.
And did we use scrap paper and glue to embellish our creation?
We did.
Look it.
We used all of these little things to make our puppet super fancy.
Thank you so much for joining me today.
I had so much fun making puppets.
Yeah, yours can be as simple as a little frog, or you can get crazy and embellish 'em and make 'em super fancy, right?
Yeah, guys.
Let's dance.
♪ All right.
Put your hands in the air ♪ ♪ and wave 'em like you just don't care.
♪ All right, we're gonna continue this, but we'll see you next time.
Bye!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hit it!
