At a board meeting Thursday night, PfISD Superintendent Douglas Killian said they would not be moving forward with a plan that would close Dessau Elementary School. But the district must now look into other ways to make up a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall.

[Killian] I'm not going to make a recommendation to close the school tonight.
Not going to make the recommendation for closure for next school year at all.
I'm going to continue to try to work magic with smaller cuts in state advocacy.
Our staff did not create this mess.
We responded to a pandemic.
We we adjusted for two years, two and a half years, what we were doing.
They didn't do anything wrong.
Now we need legislative help.
[Jackson] I am grateful for the time that it gives us as a school to improve our campus grade and work and focus on our students and closing that gap in education.
That needs to happen.
Because you all used your voice, the board heard you.
Dr. Killian heard you, and the fight for Texas public education is not over.
Now is not-- Now is the time to unite and speak up to our state legislators and senators just like you.
all have been reiterating.
[Jackson]} we plan to move forward with going down to the Capitol and working towards a change in legislation.
[Killian] There is no reason why any school should have to close when the state has $33 billion in the bank.
[applause] With that, Miss Baker, will you tell everyone what we're actually going to try to do?
So, all right.
That was dramatic.
[laughter] We are trying to save money.
